01/28/10: my step 1 experience

1/28/2010 6:21:45 PM
hey guys,
I took the exam today and I just wanted to write about my experience.
I'm a 37 yo IMG, yeah I know I'm old for this....and I've been out from the game for a while. I studied for 1 year while working part time. I was happy to take the exam today and get it out of the way, unfortunately it didn't go as expected. I found the exam really hard and I'm not sure I passed it. I had to guess 15-20 questions/block. What is the experience of the guru about this? do I have any chances to pass it, assuming that all the questions I have guessed are wrong? my score UW self ass 1: 190 (1 month ago); UW self ass 2 (1 month ago): 210, nmbe 3 440 (15 days ago), UM world overall % 65%. I had many many questions on pathology and microbiology, mainly as clinical vignette, few pharmaco, few bioch, few anatomy. Few questions on BS and embrio and I have no idea about the answer. Few gross pathol and few CT scans, mri. I just wanted th share my experience, I'm a little frustrated, but don't get discouraged you will ace it! Please let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to be of any help.
best of luck

Don't worry the score for the NBME is pretty close to the real test (1 o two point in three digits score difference). You will pass!. I am 37 and IMG too. It's never too late Praying for you all!!!

Hi!
Like you, I took the exam yesterday. Would you know how soon we can get the results? I know it says 6 weeks...but could it be sooner? I really want to know so that I can move on with my MLE plans.

I also found it difficult. The first 3 blocks were kinda easy, but from 4th to the last blocks were really insane. I had to guess hard for the best option. Hopefully we'll pass. Good luck to us!

Schifus I did my exam yesterday, and I had the same kind of test experience, but I am back on track continuing my review, I am not feeling like I did pass it, so I decided that instead of going crazy in a seat waiting for bad news, I am going head on againg againg and againg in such of way that in a month or so when I get my result I will be right on track, no time for feeling sorry about it. This is a fight that we must win. There are out there many of us IMG going other ways, nurse, us tech, and who knows? I am here for the win, and so are you.I am older than you. Here is my advise, no mather what you will get older, so better do something that will meke you feel good. I helped my wife to become an attorney, when I first her she was a secretary. We have children and a full life. So stand up shake the dust and go for it. Don't forget about reviewing general principles, it is very hiding but present in every subject and all the questions. I am praying for you and for me too.

fulano

your words are very encouraging and very true. i am also an img, a little bit younger than you but also a long time graduate. my bachelor is Physical Therapy but I also opt not to do it in US because I loved me being a doctor. I will be taking my step 1 this march 8 and hoping for the best. To you Fulano, Schifus, and the Dadoctorwho best of luck...
