How reliable is UWSA score

9/19/2008 3:39:20 PM
Just took my Step 1 exam today. Very disappointing performance. Most of the time I had no clue what the question was all about and in others I just forgot what I had read and still had to guess anyway.

Did UWorld Q-bank only once because had just that much time left before my exam and wasnt able to revise mistakes and marked questions. over all 70%. Did UWorld self assessment form 1 yesterday and got 258/720 and I thought it wasnt bad score but the exam went horribly wrong. I am old IMG and want residency in Surgery so was hoping to get score in high 90s. Feeling so depressed now.

Anyone can tell about your experience in real exam as compared to UWself assessment and how reliable is self assessmnet exm score in predicting real exam score?

Thank you pddr for the kind words. and you've got a very good score. Congratulations.

I did the UW-Q bank in last 8-9 days and I felt the UWSA tested the same concept as in Q-bank so I guess thats why i got a better score in that. The real exam was totally different. Not sure if I should have used different books or should have revised again but in real exam I had to guess in every question either familiar or not. Even missed few last question in first couple of blocks bec spent too much time guessing probably the wrong answers. Will post the score when i get the result.

Good luck for the Step II.

Got my result today. 241/99. Thank God, He answered my prayers. Even though I missed few question at the end of first two blocks and just clicked one random answers for last couple of questions in each block after that and bec as I described earlier overall had a very bad feeling abt the exam on the whole. Pddr ur good at predictions, should start a thread just predicting the final score based on nbme or uwsa scores.

My advice to everyone who is going to take the exam, if you can't chose within 10-15s of reading all answer options, dont waste more time and click one and move on. You might be missing out on last few q that can get you a few precious marks. Well, I knew all that, but one has to stay calm and remember this during the exam too. Easier said than done!

Thanks monika

Time to start studying for Step II now.

Hakman stay put and dont stop praying bec prayers make a lot of difference, atleast they did for me and keep us inofrmed of the result.

Thank you pddr. I emailed you on the address you gave for study partner thread, not sure if you've read that.

Well Ive just started with Kaplan and will do Kaplan and uw as i did before. But this time Im NOT going for 2nd revision which was a huge waste of time. The stuff I remembered was what I had revised through MCQs only. So starting with Medicine, first revision(with MCQs) asap and then just q-bank. I guess once the first revision is done, we can decide where we stand and when we can take the exam.

I wanted to start applying for res. prog. with just Step I and CS scores even though its late even for that. There are ppl who told me its difficult to get high 90s beacause its a long time since ive graduated and now are telling me there is no chance for an old IMG to get into surgery even with double 99! After reading through teh comments and experiences on several websites/blogs/forums, it seems true! But now Ive come this far so will go till the end to see if thats really true.

Just by the way, I think uwsa score is not that reliable to predict final exam score as overall uw q-bank %age is. Surewill gave the formula as (uw% x 2.44) + 70 but then everyone has different experience in exam that affects the final score.

Keep visiting

Thanks Surewill I never tried this formula before but realised it gave me my exact score!
All the best for the next Stage.

Hi pddr, I agree with you. Well you've said a few things and I do agree with all of them . As far as applying without Step II score is concerned, I would say no harm in it. I havnt yet applied because as I leave everything for the last minute, I didnt short list the residency programmes that I can apply to this late and with just Step I and CS. It wont be many bec we have to think how much it is costing us. Keeping in mind one thing, we wont be eligible for taking part in scramble if we dont apply to atleast one residency programme in the match, applying to a few programmes that sound favorable wont hurt. Whether we get any interview is not relevant.

Yes, you will need PS, LORs and get urself register with NRMP and then prepare your application on ERAS. Will email you with further details.

Good luck with prep.
