NBME Form 4....the grading scale seems to be wrong

7/20/2012 3:54:36 AM
I just took the NBME Form 4, and I paid the extra $10 for the detailed breakdown. I'm fairly sure that the grading scale on that test must be wrong. I missed 64 questions in total, which means I got 65% of the questions correct. However, I ended up with a score of 260/174. This makes absolutely no sense to me. If I got 65% of the questions correct, how can I possibly fail the test that miserably? With a percentage like that, I was expecting to not only pass, but pass by a comfortable margin. This scale simply cannot be right.

I was wondering if anyone else has this same experience. I'm no genius, and I'm not expecting to score crazy high, but I'm confident that I know enough to pass. Something seems wrong here.

Missed as in???... u got wrong or didnt attempt?

It must be right... I recently solved that test!! Got 45 wrong... got a score of 400/207...
People I know got only 14 wrong and scored 650/265!!

If you got only 45 questions wrong then you got about 75% of the questions right. How is it then that you only got a 400/207? A 207 is not even an "average" score on the USMLE, and if you're getting 75%, you should be better than average.

I think that your experience and my experience on this test shows that the grading scale for this NBME form is way too harsh. I know that not all questions are weighted the same. Some questions count for more than others. But even then, percentages like these are pretty damn good.

I have to believe that the world is just not this cruel. Overall, more than 90% of people pass this test on their first try, and the average score is 220. Based on this NBME form, you probably don't get a 220 unless you answer 80% of the questions correctly. Do you think that the "average" person is getting 80% of these questions correct? Absolutely not! It has to be far lower than that.

My conclusion is that I didn't fail this test, this test failed me.

That is what I was thinking!!!
But, I rather not take any chances!!

This didnt make any sense to me as well... but people who got 14 wrong are scoring good on their tests!!

i just did nbme 4 yday n i got 39 wrong- got 218/450, when i was expecting a much higher score, this would have been aroung 77% n seems pretty harsh to me too and slightly demoralising. i have my exam in 10 days n i'm wondering if i should postpone it. any advice anyone?

Very demoralizing indeed!!
And I thought that this was the story for everyone! But when I cross checked, people have gotten better grades..
So, I have postponed the exam!
I wish there were success stories of people, who despite scoring less in the forms scored higher on the exam!

I've been asking around, and I found out that the best predictor is NBME Form 2. Rely on that form's results as a predictor.

Same thing happened to me. I only missed 36 questions (which works out to ~80% correct), and they slapped me with a 480/225. UWorld self-assessment and NBME forms 1 & 2 all had me in the 239-244 range, so I'm hoping they're more accurate. Test is in 4 days, so I guess I'll take the free practice test and see if that raises my morale.

Would you mind telling me where the free practice test is please?

you people's confidence gets decimated really fast. all of you are scoring really high and should go take your tests. LOL hahah even if you get like high 80s 87 88 you will get into residency. this is funny to me to read these posts.
if you are passing with high scores just go take the test. there is no difference between a 97 and 99 hahah

I just took NBME 4 and my score is 310/198! One hell of an NBME...

I scored 460/210 on UWSA two weeks ago. My CK is mid November...

I took the NBME 4 too, and i got 58 questions wrong. there are 184 questions so i got the 32% of the questions wrong. I ended up with a score of 240/183. I'm not doing that bad on uworld my overall is 59% and i still have 60% of the questions left. So what's going on here? somebody explain me something please. thanks.
